Re: Cylinder block core plugs

First rule of engineering, if it's hard hit it with a softer tool, if you wish to distort it hit it with a harder tool, Core plug soft, hammer OK, hammer on hammer, both hard not OK, the only time you use hard on hard is if you wish to break something (ie a seized bearing on a shaft) in that case ta...

Re: SP250 door window reassembly - C series

The mechanism is similar to the MGB though the arms aren't, it is possible to remove the arms of both and fit the SP arms to the MGB mechanism

Re: Dart Oily Plugs

You get a larger spark so a more instantaneous burn, OK it's measured in milliseconds but every little helps and supposedly it's a cleaner burn, being electronic there is a higher Wattless voltage to the coil thus a higher HT voltage at the spark plug. The so called high performance coils have bette...

Re: Dart Oily Plugs

Couple of points ( no pun) on the last two posts, if electronic ignition of any type is fitted it is normal to increase the plug gap upto 50 thou", problems with the points can occur if the plug gap is increased with the standard two point set up. With the copper "O" rings, fit the largest size poss...

Re: Dart Oily Plugs

Yes, the copper "O" seal hardens over time, I annealed mine ( heat to red heat with a blow lamp and drop in cold water) softens them nicely, though you may only be able to do this a couple or so times as they get thinner every time, but last about 7 years

Re: Dart Oily Plugs

You don't have to grin and bear it, remove the rocker covers, then carefully remove the tubes and replace the "O" rings, or you could just try giving the tubes a nip up. When you tighten down the nuts on the rocker cover you also attempt to pull the tubes out of the head, oil finds its way to where ...

Re: 250 V8 Auto box

I had an old Volvo that dumped fluid, mainly due to the fact it overheated, though for various reasons I never cured it, ( ex scrapped car box just fitted, and part exchanged the car when cold) but I think the reason was that that either the cooling pipes to the radiator were blocked or the was no f...

Re: Dynamo to Alternator

There are many reasons why -ve earth with a dynamo, early electronic ignitions didn't have a +ve earth option, newer radios and tape decks let alone CD players were -ve earth only, the battery terminals stay cleaner with less corrosion than +ve earth, I swapped mine in the early 70s

Re: Crankshaft damper for fast road V8 engine?

They have to be heavy to work, though I have heard of hydraulic dampers, whether they would be lighter or suitable in a car engine would need some research.

Re: Transmission cover

Your selector has worn on first gear fairly cheap fix if you can strip and re-assemble the box yourself
