Re: SP gearbox removal

Hi, I had a similar problem which was solved by modifying a 7/16 unf capscrew. The taper is std. imperial taper pin. 1in48 taper. I found Manners replacement of no use as the taper did not allow for wear. The modified taper was left oversize to allow for wear in the crosshole. Below is a pic. of rep...

Re: SP gearbox removal

hi, I have always found that it is easier to remove the exhaust manifold rather than the exhaust downpipe, as the exhaust can be tricky particularly if it is a few years old.
I have only ever needed to uncouple the front propshaft bolts and then slide it back to clear the g/box flange.

Re: Crankcase breathers?

Hi, If it is a Dart engine you will be o.k. with anything up to 60p.s.i. oil pressure.

Re: valve spring retainers

Hi Terry, do you need the bottom washer or the top washer that holds the valve collets. I have plenty of both of these and am happy to supply whatever you need.

Re: Crown Wheel & Pinion

Hi, If the axle is quiet in operation with no obvious clonks on take up, do nothing. Slight increased backlash is not detrimental. If you do have a clonk on take up then examination will be necessary. I have rebuilt a couple of axles and you do not need any special tools. Just follow the manual it i...

Re: SP250 exhaust manifolds

Hi, I had a problem with exhaust manifolds. The triangular exhaust flanges tend to break off around the bolt holes. I solved the problem by cutting the complete end off where the neck is circular and welding on a complete new flange. The flange is pre machined in EN8 steel and the holes are drilled ...

Re: Backfiring and loss of power at hgher revs

If you have a conventional distributor, I would first replace the condenser. I had similar symptoms to yours and changing this, cured the problem.

Re: SP250 residual brake pressure valve and remote servo - brakes binding?

Hi, I had exactly the same problem but, I do not have a servo fitted.
In my case it was a rear brake problem and the issue was solved by replacing the flexi hoses which were restricting the flow of brake fluid.

A cautionary tale

I recently experienced clutch failure on my Dart. At first I thought it was hydraulic, but it turned out to be the failure of the cross pin that secures the forked carrier that carries the carbon thrust bearing in the bell housing. Once I had dismantled the offending item, I reamed out the hole in t...

Re: handbrake lever won't release

Sounds like you need to adjust the handbrake, which on the Dart is a very easy job to do.
I have never heard of anyone else ever wanting to alter the mechanism to the standard method of operation. I think the racing handbrake fitted to the Dart is great and very efficient.
