Re: A warning for all pre war owners.....

In my innocence I would have thought your car would be positive earth . Has yours been converted to negative earth ( or were these negative earth originally ) ? If not, your short is somewhere else, which is even more sinister

Re: SP250: points versus electronic ignition

I have had nothing but trouble with electronic ignition on my 5 classic cars and have gone back to points on all of them. I second the recommendation of the Distributor Doctor for parts and/or repairs

Re: Speedometer calibration

I realise time passes slowly in idyllic Cyprus, but I think you mean feet per second , Ian, and not feet per minute :D

Re: Speedometer calibration

Before you go to a lot of trouble and expense, check the speedo by motorway metre posts, rather than by satnav apps which may not always be accurate . At 60 mph true, = 96 kph , 2kms should take almost exactly 75 secs . If it is more than this, your speedo is overreading , and vice versa

Re: Advance Weight Springs

Coolbop : there is not instantaneous advance because the weights themselves have both inertia and friction which has to be overcome before they slide outwards under the reduced centripetal force. The force varies as the square of the rotational speed where the circular motion is uniform ( I think ! ...

Re: Advance Weight Springs

Just to be clear about this, the amount of free play governs the initial mechanical advance at idle . Assuming your distributor is a 40676A, there should be no advance below 460 crankshaft rpm, 3.5 degrees at 800 crank rpm , 16 degs at 1800 rpm and 23 degrees at 5000 rpm, all these figures to be add...

Re: Hooper Daimlers

Geoff : your comments are very interesting . However, I must add a word of warning about HD8s - these at 2 inches are far too large for a DJ254 and will result in very poor throttle response. HD6 at 1.75 inches would be about the limit I must also rather tentatively differ from you about the V8 havi...

Re: Dart sticky speedometer

I agree that taking the instrument apart is the way forward ( although it is possible that just releasing the cable connector perhaps half a turn might do the trick . I don't like the idea of WD40 which may leave a deposit although you could give it a try . I prefer to use switch cleaner which gets ...

Re: V8-250 Saloon: Manual Transmission Tunnel

Richard : I think you need to establish what the difference is between the two. I encountered this problem when trying to replace the rubber gaiter on my 2.5 V8. On the Daimler this is square section, but on the Jaguar it is circular ( or is it the other way round ? without going and looking i can't...

Re: V8-250 Saloon: Manual Transmission Tunnel

It would be a major operation to convert, as AFAIK it is not just the top cover which is different, but the metal fabrication of the tunnel as part of the bodyshell. Most people who convert Jaguars to manual boxes do not bother altering the tunnel. Note that to get the gearlever in the right place, ...
