Re: Brake backing plate rusted to bits

backing plates were not fitted to early cars ( as john wager states ) but they were fitted to all post '63 cars under the reasoning that they extend pad and disc life by reducing the amount and particle size of road grit to contact the brake disc. Some matching backplate or something close that can ...

Re: V8-250 Saloon: Brake Master Cylinder (BMC)

whilst its the same part..there were 'modifications' over the years as manufacturers changed..(brake system originally made by dunlop..later superseded by girling..with a 'cross over' mix of dunlop wheel cylinders and Girling master cylinder and servo) one issue is length of push rod was longer on l...

Re: Rocker shaft spring/washer assembly

Reply to Richard.. yes these parts are steel.. often they are copper plated though, including the rocker arms themselves..likely the orig intent of that copper 'flash coat'(its very thin) was to guard against corrosion...

Re: Dart rear caliper pistons ??

On the subject of brake fluid :- does anyone use 'DOT 5' or silicone brake fluid ? Standard brake fluid is hydroscopic ( holds water)and if not changed at the recommended intervals (most simply dont bother ) will cause the problems we commonly find ..internal corrosion leading to lack of function.. ...

Re: Engine dying after short distance

Could also be a symptom of water/other contaminents in fuel.. One way to check is to remove the float bowl covers and floats, remove carb dashpots and pistons.. soak up any fuel in the float bowls with disposable towels and look for contamination.. (there is usually some crud at the bottom) and blow...

Re: Dart rear caliper pistons ??

I believe the SP 250 originally came with Dunlop brakes..( actual calipers held to housing with 4 bolts each.. same as V8 2 1/2 litre saloon) and if so, some light corrosion on the actual pistons once cleaned up will not effect operation.. what WILL effect them is corrosion inside the bore of the ac...

Re: Tyre size options on 250

the commonly accepted standard size would be 185/80 X 15.. Vredestien are a popular and easy to find brand carried by most classic car tyre suppliers.. some budget minded people fit 165x 15 which is smaller than original.. many others seeking to save money, use larger than original.. 195/70X 15 are ...

Re: Jumping out of 2nd

Jumping out of 2nd with age is almost always due to wear on the actual synchro hub and is often combined with wear on the shims that take up the lash in the laygear to prevent fore and aft movement of said gear cluster.. there are no known short cuts to resolve this, other than a full gearbox stripd...

Re: timing chain vibration damper

the part in question is plastic and gets brittle with age .. there are many 'other' engines that use a similar arrangement... the closest relative would be from the jaguar XK engines, which use use 2 similar design 'guides' for the lower timing chain (Moss motors part number is CO-21815 for the one ...

Re: 250 saloon auto transmissiion problem

your first check should be to be sure the fluid level is where it is supposed to be, and second step is to check condition of fluid.. it should be red in colour and clean ..if it is not red but looks dirty or brownish, drain fluid, remove the sump from the gearbox and check for residue and crud in b...
