being a V8250 it will have the later marles variomaitic steering box..these trend to be fairly reliable with a 200k mile +lifespan.. as suggested above by Richard..1st thing to check is belt condition and tension.. the tensioners tend to stick up over time and need servicing on the bench when this h...

Given the ZF 4HP22 has no provision for speedometer drive ... what to do about the speedo ?

its difficult to remove the seal once fitted, without buggering it up... otherwise Id suggest checking how freely it turns without the seal in place...one long established method to deal with a tight main seal is to whack the rearmost crank web sharply with a big copper faced hammer once its al torq...

Its usually nothing more than lack of lubrication.. just go right through the whole linkage when you get the car in your possession, and oil everything related to the linkage..starting at the steering wheel end... the actual cable is notorious for drying out and getting stiff..

In my experience, the most common source of oil leaks (other than valve covers ..which tend to be obvious) and the pipes and unions that feed the valve gear, Is the rear main bearing...in which oil drips down the back of the sump and sometimes out of the joint between engine and gearbox.. look to ca...

A quick search of ebay came up with a number of suppliers...there is not much to get wrong on a simple one piece stamped steel gasket.. Ive experienced zero issues with those from normal supplie...

Both the Jaguar Mk1 and Mk2 salons were raced quite extensively and used in 'other' completion events well into the 1970s... I paid fairly close attention to racing in Uk from about '63 onwards and both raced and rallied a Riley 1.5. there were a few SP250 used in competition with reasonable success...
