Some pictures attached of the offending clutch, for your interest. That's 4 bronze plates with external keys onto the 3rd gear clutch drum, 5 steel rings with internal keys onto the first motion shaft. All the wear has been on the face between the final steel ring in the sandwich and the inside face...

Thanks Chris, I had also heard that the octane rating of fuels was that low at the time - roughly the same as the old "tractor vapourising oil" (TVO) that's not available any more either. Apparently, if you're really keen to run on authentic vintage petrol, there is an exemption in the UK ...

Thanks for that, although we seem to have gone a bit off-topic! I knew I had read about the Lanchester M-threads somewhere, but had entirely forgotten where, but yes, the table in B & H-S explains all. Next time I'm finding that 5/16 is just too small but 3/8 too large, I'll know that once again...
