Re: LA10 Rocker Arm Hardness.

I think it's just the rocker tips that are hard, but not really hard enough! I have an 18 that unusually has solid rocker arms like the 10 (not the troublesome roller-tip rockers), with worn tips which were worn making adjustment tricky, but this was surprising easy to fix - I just built up each wor...

With attachments this time - dodgy forum seems to prefer pngs to jpgs for pictures.

Re: 15/18 Early gearbox multi-plate clutch

Some pictures attached of the offending clutch, for your interest. That's 4 bronze plates with external keys onto the 3rd gear clutch drum, 5 steel rings with internal keys onto the first motion shaft. All the wear has been on the face between the final steel ring in the sandwich and the inside face...

Re: 15/18 Early gearbox multi-plate clutch

Thanks Ranald, That's really helpful - just the nugget of information that I was after! This is indeed one of the very earliest boxes, so it having had the metal-on-metal cone replaced by a multi-plate clutch very early-on would explain why the box appears to have been opened previously, why the mul...

Re: 15/18 Early gearbox multi-plate clutch

Thanks David, That is very interesting - I didn't realise that the DB18 has a multi-plate clutch arrangement, despite being an externally very different type of box, and made much later. Similar to your description, the plates on this clutch can't eaily be separated without grinding out the rivets t...

15/18 Early gearbox multi-plate clutch

Hello! It's a long while since I posted anything on here; I hope somebody will know the little nugget of information that I'm after. Today I had a rather enjoyable day stripping and rebuilding the gearbox from an early Lanchester 15/18. I've done a few of these gearboxes now, and something I've been...

SP250 spark plugs

I just read Andrew R's "Never seen that before" article in this month's DM regarding a broken Champion spark plug. I don't usually read/post on the SP250 forum, but felt the urge to share some thoughts/experience. This has happened to me before, and the problem turned out to be rather sini...

Re: Lanchester 15/18 timing

Thanks Chris, I had also heard that the octane rating of fuels was that low at the time - roughly the same as the old "tractor vapourising oil" (TVO) that's not available any more either. Apparently, if you're really keen to run on authentic vintage petrol, there is an exemption in the UK ...

Re: Lanchester 15/18 timing

Hi Paul, The "Automatic" timing advance on these cars just refers to the balance weights and springs built into the distributor base that advance the ignition with engine speed - there is no vacuum advance. On my car, my preference has been to set the timing to the "correct" adva...

Re: Lanchester radiator cap - thread identification

Thanks for that, although we seem to have gone a bit off-topic! I knew I had read about the Lanchester M-threads somewhere, but had entirely forgotten where, but yes, the table in B & H-S explains all. Next time I'm finding that 5/16 is just too small but 3/8 too large, I'll know that once again...
