I seem to remember that the spring rates are different because of the lighter weight of the V8 engine, but I'd be surprised if the dampers changed. Perhaps someone has access to the original part numbers?

Thanks for the advice and information folks; I think I'm tending to lean towards the convertor drain - down, the car has been standing for some time, so the scenario seems to fit. It's definitely tight up there, but the car has a small panel in the transmission tunnel, detachable from the passenger ...
