Thanks for your input but I have tried polishing but the polish seems to soak in to the Bakelite then after a few days it is dry and powdery again, almost as if the outer coating has gone , perhaps a coat of varnish.

Hello. The spark plug cover on my car is very porous and powdery looking , what is the best way to improve the appearance of it , also there appears to be evidence of some gold colour on the raised Daimler logo and spark and point gap info , would this have been painted gold originally .

Some good news , I have a NOVA certificate and I didn't have to pay any duty or vat , HMRC were very efficient and after filling in the form online I was sent the NOVA within days , The paper work is now with the DVLA so its now wait and see.
