Re: SP250 residual brake pressure valve and remote servo - brakes binding?

Fully agree on the free play, however the restrictor valve is what it says, it restricts the flow to the rear brakes to avoid lock ups, it does not hold a pressure and shouldn't hold a pressure. To check where you think the there is pressure hold on the brakes, put the car on axle stands, check the ...

Re: V8-250: Oil - 20W/60

Hi Richard, I always poured new oil in until it flowed clear at the sump, car was jacked so there was a slight tilt to the drain, the oil stayed bright green for at least 1000 miles.

Re: V8-250: Oil - 20W/60

I am not so sure the Turner V8 is a dirty engine, I suspect that it has earned that reputation due to local short runs or mostly town work, back in the early 70's I regularly commuted between Sunbury on Thames and the Portsmouth area with a few runs to Southampton and the New Forrest whilst in that ...

Re: Speedometer calibration

It is reasonably easy to check the real speed by using a digital tachometer and looking up the rolling circumference or diameter of the tyre, or checking by marking the tyre and the ground them moving the car one rev of the wheel, measure that distance in feet, the gearbox ratio in top is 1-1 the di...

Re: Advance Weight Springs

When I timed the engine I set the timing statically as in the manual, this requires it to be checked on a number of revolutions as there is a slight difference of position every time the distributor is moved, once set at least 2 revolutions by hand is needed to ensure accuracy, I then fired up the e...

Re: Speedometer calibration

I was accused by a police sergeant in a Ford van of doing over 85mph on 185 R15 tyres with the rev counter reading 3500rpm or just over 70mph, as he didn't have a calibrated speedo, I argued and walked away without any more action, but he was probably right. I always worked on the rev counter more a...

Re: Speedometer calibration

Depends on your tyre size, 165 R15 will over read 185 R15 will under read, 185/70 R15 is about right. the speedometer works on a magnetic slip via a fixed gear ratio.

Re: V8 saloon Idle speed

Idle speed on the 2.5 V8 engine should be 500rpm, if you think about it that equates to 1000rpm on a 4 cylinder engine as the number of firing strokes/ min, at 500rpm there is no centrifugal advance ( see the topic on advance weight springs).
