Re: Conundrum - two balls

..... and I suspect the hollow one will float in a known liquid, maybe not fresh water..... Regardless of whatever liquid you immerse them in, both balls will behave identically. They have the same mass and external dimension and will therefore displace the same amount of liquid and experience the ...

Re: The time signal

If you're listening to analogue radio (AM or FM) the pips are pretty accurate and consistent. If digital (DAB) they can easily be one or two seconds out. If it's internet radio it could be up to eight seconds late. The delays are due to the time it takes to encode and decode the multiplex signal. Th...

Re: Time Clock Polarity

Polarity reversal is usually possible, but the method depends on the type of clock. I believe your conquest dash is wooden since instrument grounding is via an earth strap? If this is the case you can simply reverse the connections; the live feed (now positive) will now connect to the previous earth...

Re: Conundrum - two balls

The "roll down a slope" is effectively not such a sound arguemet! If the balls were released down an slope of indeterminable length the action of gravity would be acting upon the same mass over a given height - so the balls would theoretically roll the same distance. (i.e. the potential e...

Re: Conundrum - two balls

... surely the hollow one will float, or at least sink more slowly as it tries to float. Weight is irrelevant, it's the air inside which will give buoyancy. Archimedes' principle The upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid, whether fully or partially submerged, is equal t...

Re: Conundrum - two balls

Hi, Norfolk Lad is correct. The hollow sphere has a greater rotational inertia, the mass (weight) is concentrated further from the centre, and therefore will accelerate more slowly under the same gravitational force. Therefore the solid one will get to the bottom of the ramp first. Sorry Nick, wron...

Re: Conundrum - two balls

Not sure if rolling the balls down a ramp down constitutes a mechanical test , but if it is admissable there will be a difference in time to travel a common distance under gravity alone. Assuming pure rolling (no sliding), the balls need to accelerate under the component of gravitational acceleratio...

Re: SP250 Rack & Pinion Conversion

I believe The 'Car SOS' team did a straightforward R&P conversion on the car although without power steering, but did add a brake servo to lighten up driving effort for the driver. I don't think they specified the donor source but since the conversion involved welding fittings tot the chassis it...
