Re: BW35 in ‘69 saloon

The reference to the DG250 auto box might be the key, in so much that the innards are slightly different to the BW35 and that MAY account for the filter Moss is showing. Just to add to the above : there is no resemblance at all between the DG box and the BW35 . The DG as fitted by Jaguar in all Jag...

Re: v8 250/SP ignition timing with strobe light

Incorrect. The strobe works off the HT lead for no 1 cylinder and flashes when the HT pulse travels down the lead. The fact that there are 2 sets of points does confuse people . However, once you realise that it is the second pair of points to open which breaks the low tension circuit and creates th...

Re: Another engine disaster

I wouldn't worry about the apparent low compressions. It is very common for a newly built engine to have low compression until the valves have landed on their seats a few times, and the smoke currently being emitted is the result of the oil which has been put into the cylinders. What the engine need...

Re: suck, squeeze, bang, blow

A simplistic way of looking at it is that the speed of advance of the flame front on petrol at the stoichiometric mixture strength is generally taken as approximating to 120 feet per second averaged over the whole propagation cycle . Weakening mixture probably reduces the speed, but leads eventually...

Re: Daimler Timing v8

I must respectfully disagree with Ian : I think your picture shows it as it should be . One tooth represents about 25 degrees of distributor rotation, or 50 degs of crankshaft rotation

Re: Daimler Timing v8

The oil pump drive gear should be the opposite way round from what is shown in fig 26 : the keyway should point outwards from the camshaft , and the offset slot should be nearly parallel with , and on the same side , as the camshaft. Why they drew it as they did is a bit of a mystery !

Re: V8 Saloon - Fitting New Front Brake Discs and Cylinder Blocks

The service manual official part list refers to Cylinder Blocks - These bolt on to the Capiler casting with 4 bolts each. Well, I have the factory parts book in front of me and it calls the parts, correctly , 8777 Piston and cylinder assembly . There are, however, two different caliper assemblies f...

Re: Windscreen trim

I wouldn't use anything metal - the risk of damaging the seal, cracking/scratching the glass, or damaging paint is high. The professionals usually use a plastic spatula - if you go to your local windscreen place they may give you one !

Re: V8 Saloon - Fitting New Front Brake Discs and Cylinder Blocks

The purpose of the shims is to centre the disc within the caliper . If you are " out of centre" then either you have too many or not enough shims, or ( and this is not all that unusual ) the disc is turning eccentrically . A dial gauge is the best thing for measuring this run-out , and the...

Re: Daily driver tomorrow

The hackneyed expression " 99% of troubles with SU carbs are ignition related " comes to mind. You have not mentioned ignition timing . The vacuum advance has little effect in this situation, but if the static timing was grossly retarded you could get this effect, and even more so if the m...
