Re: SP250 Brake Pad Types

In the past I have bought a 3-4 inch grinding wheel, snapped it in half and fitted them as pads, jacked up the rear axle and fired up the engine and let it run on idle in third gear cleans the disc up nicely. The fronts are more difficult but can be done by parking a front wheel drive car alongside ...

Re: MoT exemption

The rigid column is safe except in the case of hitting a snow plough, it is so low that anything will ride up and over it, from what R&P systems I've seen they are no safer than original there not being enough angle for the column above the universal joint not to be pushed into the car. What wil...

Re: MoT exemption

That would seem reasonable to assume, there are various methods of converting to R&P, the rack mounting and the geometry using various rod ends and racks. The FBVHC or the DOT ( or whatever it is called today) are not into verifying design changes ( either amateur or professional) and will leave...

Re: SP250 Restrictor or non-return valve for brakes

It really depends on your driving and where you drive, it is highly unlikely if you live around the M25 and use it the double pump will not be required or the pad ride out will occur unless the rear axle tubes are moving. From the last time I drove down south it is also unlikely you will experience ...

Re: SP250 Restrictor or non-return valve for brakes

Though I initially had pad ride out on my C spec I eliminated most of it by stripping down the restrictor valve and bleeding the system using the Gunson Auto bleeder, well at least on the road, I have never needed a double pump but that maybe due that I never braked on a single pump anyway always at...

Re: Dart Brake Calipers

The SP brakes are Girling, the front pistons and seals are Ford Corsair, the Pads Zephyr Mk 4 I seem to remember, the rear pistons and seals are Jaguar MK10 can't remember the pads but were one of the common cars. I remember looking at a 4 pot replacement front caliper and thought the Volvo 145 esta...

Re: Question on 2 1/2 litre main bearing bolt strength..

We must agree to differ, the engine for what it was designed for is perfectly suitable, the problem is Jaguar put the wrong engine in the saloon, Jaguar has always had problems with their low capacity engines 2.4-2.8 were never as good as the 3.4-3.8 and they had problems with the 4.2, the XK engine...

Re: Question on 2 1/2 litre main bearing bolt strength..

I don't believe there is any specific problem with the bottom end, especially on the main bearings, we are now talking about 60+year old engines that have had many fingers playing with them. I admit that the centre main does tend to wear more than the other four but not that much and is a good point...

Re: Question on 2 1/2 litre main bearing bolt strength..

Be extremely wary of main bearing bolts, they can bottom and not achieve a clamping torque even though the torque setting is achieved on the wrench, found this out many years ago when one bolt sheered whilst replacing a bearing, strangely the centre one, on checking there was about 2mm difference in...

Re: Dart vibration at 5000 rpm in second gear

The most suspect bearing causing the problem would be the one connecting the first motion shaft to the second motion shaft, failure of this bearing along with wear in the two main bearings is the reason for chipped teeth on first gear.
