Re: E10 fuel and other matters
Thank you Richard, very helpful. I missed the article in DM unfortunately.

Re: Daimler 15: stripped thread
The nuts that fitted the correctly threaded head studs didn't properly fit the"rogue" stud - they started to thread ok but then got very tight indeed as the whole nut threaded on. Based on what Chris wrote in that last post I suspect the rogue stud could have had M6 fine thread - my 20 tpi...

Re: E10 fuel and other matters
The FBHV article was very interesting. There may well be a lot of hysteria as is suggested, but I think there is sufficient evidence that there are some modifications or actions we can take that would be sensible to combat the issues that E10 petrol can cause in our older vehicles. I've just been lo...

Re: Daimler 15: stripped thread
Curioser and curioser! Finally had time to do a proper investigation today with results that surprised me. The head stud itself is 3/8 inch diameter with 20 tpi threads at each end which are not 3/8 inch BSF threads, but an oversize thread which requires a different (slightly larger) head nut than t...

Re: Daimler 15: stripped thread
Rolf, not all thread inserts are round in cross section: this extract from the web page of a UK based thread insert supplier explains that theirs are diamond shaped cross sections (the article goes on to explain why this cross section gives better performance for many engineering applications). I ma...

V8 250 Prices on the rise?
In the September issue of Classic Car Mart (why do they publish a month early?) KC2000 Ltd are advertising a V8 250 saloon at £36,995. The small ads in the same edition have a V8 250 on sale at £45,995.
Is it me, or are Daimlers finally venturing into Jaguar Mark 2 price territory?

Re: Daimler 15: stripped thread
I removed the "spring" from the stud and took this photo. I guess that it's a threaded insert judging by the consistent thickness and the cleanliness of the edges. I've examined the hole in the block as closely as I can (strong torch beam and magnifying glass); the thread looks to be in go...

Re: Daimler 15: stripped thread
The photo shows what greeted me after I removed the cylinder head today. It looks like there was a helicoil already in use which failed. It doesn't look long enough to my inexperienced eye. The challenge now is to find out what size and length thread insert I should use given that the stud hole in t...

Re: Daimler 15: stripped thread
Thank you all for your comments. As a novice researching "helicoil" I see that there are things called "externally threaded inserts" that also, of course, have internal threads for the stud. Can anyone comment about the suitability or merits of the external threaded inserts as co...

Daimler 15: stripped thread
Putting the head back on the block yesterday I was progressively tightening the head bolts towards 41 foot pounds. At 30, the rearmost head stud (that is threaded into the block) stripped the thread in the block. All the others tightened up okay. What is the solution? Is there an engineering fix (ho...
