I would not be too quick to blame an error on you part Steve. It could well be the regulator failed and caused all your problems. I would be sending the regulator back to the manufacturer and hope they will treat you kindly. Frankly the old coils and relays regulators worked well for 50-60 years oft...

Steve, the A terminal on your regulator is connected directly to the battery, it is the supply feed to the regulator so will always have 12 volts on it regardless of the ignition key position.
