Re: special sport gearbox.

Sorry, David, the misreading is all mine. If there’s one thing about the SS gearbox to remember it is that whether the top gear adjuster has been tweaked manually or not if it doesn’t slip then I BESEECH you to leave it well alone! For reasons too technical to go into here these overdrive boxes can ...

Re: special sport gearbox.

That’s good news David. As far as the pull rods are concerned if they’re protruding above the adjusting nut that much then probably the brake bands are significantly worn. However, unless you want to grab the nettle, so to speak, and overhaul the box straight away (which is what’ll be needed) I woul...

Re: special sport gearbox.

David, as the top gear clutch components wear toggle action increases. Given that I would doubt your adjustment is out, although you could try screwing the stop bolt all the way in, thus taking the automatic adjuster out of the system. Theoretically toggle action would then be fierce, but in practic...

Re: special sport gearbox.

David, overdrive is supposed to occupy the upper position of the selector quadrant. The gears on your quadrant should read R - N -1 - 2 - T - O.

Re: special sport gearbox.

OK! The Special Sports gearbox overdrive is operated by a conventional epicyclic gear while top gear is a multi plate clutch exactly as employed by the Consort, Conquest, DB 18 saloon cars. The Special Sports top gear is operated by actuating an outer hub which features 3 helical grooves. This hub r...

Re: special sport gearbox.

I can’t see why diesel shouldn’t be used- after all, diesel is a very thin oil. However, it may not be a particularly good solvent, but worth a go!

Re: special sport gearbox.

The top gear engagement mechanism is entirely different from all the other gears (I assume we’re actually talking about top gear and not overdrive - they’re often confused with each other). Top gear doesn’t use either an epicyclic or a brake band, it uses a multi plate clutch which locks the input a...

Re: special sport gearbox.

No, it hasn’t been ‘adulterated’! The tail pins are indeed welded to the cover.

Re: DB18-1 Petrol Reserve Tap

Replacing the 2 cork seals of these fuel valves is pretty easy. Once the valve has been removed from the car you’ll find a small slot-headed stop screw threaded into the brass body of the valve. You can’t miss it! Undo this screw and the plunger complete with cork seals can now be withdrawn from the...
