piston rings and gasket set.

Post by swcoulthurst »

Well. Picked up the chassis (engine and box) at weekend.

However the engine is seized so I'm going to have to strip it. I'm looking to buy an engine gasket set. There is one on Ebay at £225.00 plus carriage. Is that about the right cost ?

Also I may need to get a set of piston rings. Any idea where is the best place to get them ?

Cheers Guys
Stuart

If you require piston rings for the 2,433c.c. engine.

Dave Philpot comments
"Unless I am very much mistaken, the compression rings (NOT oil control though!) are the same as used in the BMC "B" series 1,622.c. engine? (Oxford VI, A60 Cambridge, Wolseley 16/60, MG Magnette IV, & Riley 4/72)."

Always a good bet is john at thorntons in Shrewsbury ( john is restoring a dart)

If you go as far as new Pistons, I have a new set available.

John Nash, David Beales and Derek Sleigh all keep gasket sets.

sorry. Those who dont know.

Conquest Century SP260 ( I think) ? 1957 engine with fully auto box.

Stripped engine today.Crank very rusty and pistons seized in cylinders. Everything looks very clean though with little or no wear (apart from pistons seized). Looks like its been stood without any oil in it for quite a long time. Possibly even had work done then left.

Fingers crossed for the next stage (trying to remove pistons).

Just to throw in my tupennorth ........................

Make sure the piston rings you buy are the exact size for your pistion, as some people believe you can use oversize rings and gap them down.

Unfortunately, this is not true - as the radial pressure exerted by the ring when in situ will not be uniform, leading to loss of compression and rapid wear.

Thanks for your comment Stan.

Fortunately I'm not one of the people you are talking about. If it being stripped and rebuilt its got to be done properly or its a wasted exercise.

Also ref the new pistons. Not got them out yet, work seems to sometimes get in the way ! Will see what they are like when I get them out.

Cheers

Hi. Could you let me know how much for the pistons. These are not going to come out without damage. Also are they pistons and liners or just pistons ?
