Parts for 1933 LA Engine

Post by Culbu »

Hello everybody,

For a 1933 LA engine, I'm looking for a complete set of engine gaskets (at least the rocker cover one), a condenser (fitted under the distributor cap) and a contact points set.

Thanks.

Julian

A new rocker cover gasket is easiest made from a sheet of cork cut to size. The majority of cork gaskets sold pre made are really on the thin side and may be all right if the components are in perfect condition but for a good oil tight seal, making one at home is the best answer.

The points fitted in 1933 should probably be ST351 - link below :

(I say "probably" because some late cars may have been fitted with DK distributors or had a DK baseplate fitted - see below.)

However, I am not entirely convinced that the threads on the screw contact are a perfect fit for the original baseplates - I don't mean with these ones in particular but just various sets I have had from differing long forgotten sources. If they are not a good secure fit, they will not adjust firmly as it's the screw contact that is the moving one. Just something to watch.

The condensers for these DJ type baseplates are long obsolete. They are subtly different from the DK type in that the securing tang with the hole to screw it to the baseplate is longer for a DJ type condenser than a DK one. The replacements sold with a clamp and a hole in it are all too short as supplied but provided you make a longer "tail" for the clamp, they will fit.

There are some alternative things that can be done. A DK type baseplate will fit the DJ distributer without modification. This allows you to fit the 400415 type of points

(Don't be put off by the listing details, they are the right ones for a DK distributor.)

Also the later , though very similar looking condenser. These are cheapest from Moss :

and are exactly the same as the ones you'll see advertised at 3 times the price elsewhere. I've had a lot of them from Moss in the last few years and no duds - so far !

The baseplates are

Have to dash -may write more later
