Hi All.

Finally got the seized pistons out of the block but need a set of liners. Don't suppose anyone has a set of 6 ?

Will also depend on size of pistons. To be honest, I always thought you fitted new pistons and liners as a matched pair etc.

I would guess most engine machine shops could supply.

Coventry Boring did the work on my SP engine to sort it out.

Fitting new liners is not really a home workshop task, at least only for the knowledgeable and well equipped and few of us are that fortunate but most engine machine shops do have the dimensions for the liners for most engines.

I had an Austin six cylinder done at Merediths of Welshpool, they found some Ford liners of the same dimensions but an inch too long so they pressed them in and machined them down to size, then bored them out to fit the pistons I managed to find.

Even the machine shops get in wrong. The liners in mine slipped after a rebuild by Russ Carpenter.

Yes I know about fitting liners. I can have then machined no problem and as some may be aware (from my post in the workshop technical section) we do extensive engine repairs.. Just thought I'd see if there were any about before ordering from Westwood.

Cylinder liners are very common parts and made in various styles and types.. its always wise to specify 'stepped' liners when replacing a 'dry' liner in a block that has passed its limits for normal range of oversize pistons .. the step is commonly machined into the bottom of liner and prevents it from moving downward under the forces created from compression.. In UK there useD to be different hardness available too..I recall the original factory replacements for the jaguar 3.8 are fairly hard steel as opposed to cast iron which is the common material for cylinder liners..

Hi Stuart,

You cannot change the liners yourself - although to be fair, you've never said that in your posts!

I suggest you give Chase Engine Services Ltd a ring and discuss with them, and they are not too far from you in Stoke-on-Trent where they specialise in engine blocks.

I have no connection or involvement with them - but I can vouch for their execellent work and know-how - and everything is done in-house (so avoiding those who sub your work out then add a profit for themselves!!).

However, are you sure your liners need changing?? Would they not hone or rebore to next size given you apparently wanyt pistons anyway??

On the subject of liners:- I just received a V8 2 1/2 in for overhaul.. current owner had the car since approx 40k miles.. its now around 85k miles.. found something never before encountered.. someone brazed up a crack in one of the cylinder liners ( id post it here but site says 'file too large' to download) there has been extensive welding to both heads under the value covers, due to past frost damage that must have occoured in Uk before it was sold and shipped to USA in 1970s.. a new liner will be required to resolve the issue with the cylinder block..

Pistons eventually came out with the liners, so well seized. Liners cracked so gave up as a bad job. Ended up rebuilding another engine.
