Asking the Right Question

Post by theoldman »

A conversation today about the above reminded me of my days with the Pearl Assurance Company.

I had a vacant book in the Saxmundham area and asked the District Manager for a temporary collector. He indicated that he was seriously considering a permanent collector to relieve for illness, holidays, vacancies etc and duly put an ad in the paper. (you did that sort of thing then!!)

Anyway, to cut a long story short, he interviewed people for the job.

This very smart young fellow was selected and the District Manager apparently asked him if he had a clean driving licence. He replied that he had three points for speeding, which the manager said was OK, and he was instructed to present himself at my house on the following Monday morning, when i would take him out and train him.

The training progressed through the week and by Thursday I considered him knowledgeable enough to collect the premiums and fill in the required paperwork. I told him to report again on the following Monday.

This he duly did. I gave him the book, the collecting list, the life and general insurance renewal documents and told him to make a start on that week's collections."Off you go", said I."How do I get there?" (from Beccles) he asked. "In your car of course" I replied. "I don't have a car, I came to yours on the bus. The District Manager only asked me if I had a clean licence, not if I had a car"

Oh whoops................

How do some people think? I had a similar experience when I needed a delivery driver.

A chap I knew applied for the post and after a very satisfactory interview I was about to offer him the job but asked about his driving licence, driving licence? I don't have one.

Ironically he had been the manager of a local business that went bust, I wonder why?
