Maximum size of pictures on the forum?

Post by Chris_R »

What is the maximum size for adding pictures on the forum? I just took a picture on my iPhone and it won't upload to the forum which says the file is too large. The file is 3.70MB.

The maximum size is 3MB but even this is unnecessarily high for a website. Modern cameras seem to take photos over 3MB as standard but they will just clog up our database.

Photos 1024 x 768px up to 300KB are perfectly adequate. We get a lot of photos in the 50 to 300KB range and another grouping around the 2MB range.

The Lightbox software shows them at 400px wide and then they are enlarged when you click on them to fit to the page, not exceeding the original px size.

If using a pc with windows you can change the size with "Paint" or a lot of other programs that display photos.

Hello Chris,

Here is a useful bit of software: http://www.imageoptimizer.net/Pages/Home.aspx

Simple and efficient.

Regards.

Thanks John. Another forum (using the same software as this one) that I subscribe to has implemented an automatic mechanism to resize images as they are uploaded so that all images are resized down to an optimum size for the forum.
Is that something you could think about or look at doing?

Although our forum is based on the standard phpBB software, we are using a style designed by someone else, approved by phpBB, and automatic resizing isn't in the style software although it might be one of the add-ons that we could have. I'll take a look.
