The new forum seems to be going really well, it is different, but I am sure
that we will all get used to it.
What does everybody else think?
The main thing is, that we can continue to pass on info, advertise all things car related,
and be rude to Big Al!
Everyone seems to be finding posting pictures much easier. I've never tried,
but it sounds like perhaps I ought to?
My dislikes are:- I don't want to LIKE or DISLIKE a topic.
THIS IS A CAR FORUM - NOT FACEBOOK .
NOR DO I NEED TO KNOW WHEN ANYONE'S BIRTHDAY IS?
Other than that, thanks for all the hard work, Peter.
Originally the Board were going to need volunteers to 'cut and paste'
all valuable posts from the old forum to the new one.
Then it was not certain that this would be possible, due to incompatability.
It will make a lot of people very happy, if this is possible.
And I'll volunteer?
Helen

Re: Comments on New Forum
Hi, there are plenty of responses to how people like the new forum on both this forum and the old one.
I agree, no "like" or "dislike" option. Also, no "thanks" option either.
Copying and pasting old posts is just about the daftest idea going. The old content should be copied in its entirety to the new forum.
The only thing I don't like about the new layout is the amount of space it takes on the screen. Three lines to identify a forum on the list of forums instead of 2. But that is a scheme thing. A new scheme could be produced in time which shows the same content in a different way and even with different colours. But I would say, that's for later. The most important thing is to get the content copied across and to switch off the old forum. Having the 2 run alongside is also not a sensible idea either.

A question for the administrators. Are all posts now prevetted before posting? Was this the case with the old forum?
Am imagining the workload and also the delays in getting postings on the forum.

Re: Comments on New Forum
There is first post approval for all new registrations, today there were three Russians who registered, they didn't post but if they did it would have been only visible to me or John H. After approval of a first post there is no further requirement for post approval (except that there is a bug in this version which means that the member has to be manually removed from the setting that sets first post approval; the most recent version cures this bug but this forum hasn't been updated yet. If I don't remove a member from the first post approval setting, he will be subject to post approval until I do).simonp wrote:A question for the administrators. If someone registers and posts several posts quickly after registration, they will all be subject to approval until one is approved (someone had two posts for approval today).
However, if I notice that someone has registered and hasn't posted yet but is a known person from the old forum or whose Reason for Membership is sensible, I disable the first post approval requirement for that person so he can post straight away without approval. So the vast majority of members are now free of first post approval, even if they haven't posted yet. The first post approval is a safety net for those new members I don't know or trust.
When this forum was first set up there was no first post approval and we had some spam posts, one with photos of young ladies, so I set up first post approval.
John H will know what happens on the old forum but I think he vets people thoroughly before he activates their membership, while this forum is on self-activation by email with a safety net of first post approval.

Hi John, I hope you are better, yes vetting is not hard on the old forum as it is very easy to spot the "baddens". Also if they cant name a Daimler model then deletion is instant. No one is be let on now anyway.
