I resisted for a long time, but there became so many videos I couldn't see and some closed groups I wanted to join that eventually I signed up.

I used a false name and an email address that I don't normally use which does not contain my real name and no other profile data (except, I think, a false date of birth), and I have not accepted any 'friends' (several requests every day). I get requests to update my profile, but I've ignored them.
I think YouTube are trying to weed out people using false names, but they haven't rumbled me yet.
So it may be worth trying this.
