Worm Drive Lubricants.

Post by Stan Thomas »

What is the general concensus of opinion regarding a suitable/best lubricant for Daimler worm drive differentials?

According to API recommendations, it should be a GL2 oil - which was specifically blended for worm drive gears, but is no longer blended - the current recommendation being to use a staight GL1 oil as GL3, 4 or 5 oils are not suitable because it may attack the bronze components.

Therefore it seems on the face of it whilst a GL1 oil is of lesser quality, higher grade oils cannot be used.

THat said, are any of the fully synthetic gear oils suitable, and does anyone have specific experience in the best oil to use?

Hi Stan, I contacted Morris lubricants who were really helpful. They recommended Golden Film oil which states GL1 compatability. I used AG140 in my DB18/2 earlier in the year to replace unknown oil. Yet to check what it now looks like but there is a post on here about this.

As long as it's a good quality straight (non - EP) 140 grade you will come to no harm.

I seem to recall a couple of similar threads on the old forum that yielded pretty much the same consensus. Might be worth a search?
Best wishes, Dave B
