Preventing spread of rust in hub caps

Post by John-B »

I've just noticed pin-head sized rust spots on my chromed hub caps.

The hub caps obviously get wet on the inside and I can paint any type of waterproof paint there because it won't be visible.

For the chrome outside, what do you suggest to minimise the spread of the rust? It's too early to think about re-chroming as the spots are tiny. I'm thinking of a clear lacquer. I don't want to use anything sticky like grease or Vaseline which would attract dirt and stop them shining. I think car polish would not be enough.

Any suggestions?

I painted the inside of mine with waxoyl thinned down with petrol. It certainly stopped the rust developing, and was easy to remove.

You could try this before waxing regularly.

Try Bilt Hamber waxes, something like Autobalm, Hydrawax or Finis Wax will do the job. I have used them for years, very satisfied with the results.
