Retaining Original Registration No

Post by JT7196 »

Hi, I have been asked to help the owner of a Lanchester retain the number off of his car as it has now been sold.
Can anybody advise as to the correct procedure that needs to be followed, please and of course how to prove the origin of the original Reg No etc

Best wishes, Alan

If the reg. number is not already known to the DVLA computer, then even if it can be reissued, it will be only for the original car on a non-transferrable basis. John

If the number is on the DVLA computer, the current owner needs to fill in a V317 form. The vehicle must, it says, be of a testable type and "be subject to an MOT". I am presuming that Historic class vehicles are still considered a testable type because it seems fairly clear that people do take the numbers off them but that is an assumption and it would be helpful to know of someone who has carried out this procedure recently and knows exactly what the practical implementation of this is.

Send off £80 with the form and either the number will come back on a retention certificate (unless the owner has specified a vehicle for the number to go on to) along with a replacement number for the vehicles being deprived of its original registration - or - the DVLA will want the vehicle inspected first. I'm not sure how they do this now that the local offices are closed but no doubt there is a system in place for this. The applicant is to allow up to 4 weeks for all this to happen.

Instead of filling in the form on paper, it can be done online now :
