Just remember, though, to clean your gun with methylated spirit, not thinners as Barcoat is alcohol based.

Two Barcoats and tonic please, landlord........................... :o

Ah! I read on the Barcoat data sheet about using alcohol based thinners, something I had never heard of. I asked a couple of people at work who used to do car body work 1 shrugged and the other said ordinary thinners should do it OK. Does thinners not touch the Barcoat then?

Nick,

If either Cellulose or Synthetic thinners could dissolve Barcoat, it would not do its job.

If you put cellulose or synthetic (Xylene) thinners in a gun which has had Barcoat in it, it just goes "bitty" and will not dissolve. makes a real mess!!! The only way to clean is with Meths (works and is cheap) or absolute alcohol (good, but expensive).

I wonder if you could use Gin.......................?

I think I will have to engage brain in future before posting silly questions. You are obviously quite right Neil.

I think the best thing to do with the gin is put tonic in it and drink it, it would certainly taste much better than meths and tonic!

Thanks for the tip.

I had mine sand basted to strip it of all the many accumulated layers and then two-packed. Of course the tyres were off as I was replacing them. The result is very good and the cost reasonable plus it took no time at all.

I was just going to lash a coat of paint on them to make them look better, then I got the reaction. The tyres are scrap anyway they are 50 years old at least. I took all the old paint off with various shaped rotary wire brushes down to bare metal. You know how these little jobs turn into a marathon !
