Worth checking if is really important that you have the correct answer, but I believe that the main constituent is fish oil.

I'd also heard that the main constituent was fish oil, although it's hard to believe that that would have such an inoffensive odour. What species of fish?

No fish oil that’s a myth Is does however have the following according to their safety data sheet:-


WD-40's main ingredients as supplied in aerosol cans, according to U.S. Material Safety Data Sheet information, are:
50% "aliphatic hydrocarbons"
<25% petroleum base oil.
12–18% low vapor pressure aliphatic hydrocarbon.
2–3% carbon dioxide.
<10% inert ingredients.

They state quite emphatically on their website that no fish oils are used.

Most of the car yards here in Australia use shark oil.
