Aluminium Treatment
Why do I get a "white powder" formation on parts of my crankcase whilst the car is in perfect dry storeage, and what can I use to dispel and prevent it?

Re: Aluminium Treatment
Oxidisation from the oxygen in the air. I would think a protective layer of polish or the oily rag treatment would prevent it.

Re: Aluminium Treatment
They do a Clear coat paint Stan which should help but its a standard age related issue with the aluminium oxidising.

Re: Aluminium Treatment
For a few years I've sprayed WD40 on all the plain aluminium under bonnet components of all my cars, both old and modern, and other metals including painted parts, being careful to avoid spray on fan and other drive belts/pulleys etc. This includes SU carbs, distributors and their caps, polished rocker covers, cylinder heads and so on. Come spring I wipe off the surfaces with a cotton cloth and polish those parts that merit such a finish. This seems to prevent the deterioration of everything due to winter road treatments on the everyday moderrn machines, condensation in damp weather and so on, without resorting to lacquer and other surface finishes that don't appear to last long on plain metal surfaces.
I recommend it.
Cheers
Geoff

Re: Aluminium Treatment
Three questions.
Why is it called WD40?
Why is not WD42/43/38 etc?
What is its main constituent?
No prizes but it might be an interesting read

That advert really deserves a comment, but I can't think of anything suitable!
