MOT Changes for cars over 40 years!

Post by Reedweaver »

No MOTs for cars over 40 years from May this year.. Only just found out!

"Most vehicles manufactured or first registered over 40 years ago will, as of 20 May
2018, be exempt from periodic testing unless they have been substantially changed".

Read six pages here viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2988&p=17906&hilit=mot#p17906
Note substantial changes require an MOT and need to register as exempt

Does this mean that all exempt classes of vehicles cannot now be MOT'd?
I usually put my old girls through one each year as we operate as a wedding car business and I feel it reassures clients that we have everything properly checked. It does however run to expense which all comes out of the pot.

Peter you can have your cars MOT'ed after May if you choose.

I think it is very wise thing to do. I have spoken to my pet MOT man, he has agreed to do a "pre MOT" check of my three cars for £25 per car plus vat and give me a written report, bit of a middle of the road option but it will give me a second opinion, and I will of course fix anything untoward that comes up.

Last MOT on my SP, I had not fitted a nut on the front suspension with a split pin when I did the rebuild, it had undone it's self almost off the thread. MOT man spotted it in two minutes, I had spent half a day checking the car before taking it to him. Syd

I think the important points are:
If you are getting an MOT then you need do nothing.
If you are not getting an MOT then you must fill out the exemption form.
