New pistons and new crankshaft

Post by New Dexter »

I have a young friend who, while not strictly a car mechanic, has been trying to restore his grandfather's Riley 9. I helped him remove the body which he sold to a specialist and the rolling chassis is with someone else.
However, he's been told that the engine needs both four new pistons and a crankshaft. Exact reasons why are not yet available. Apparently the cost of these five items is between £12 to £14,000 which strikes me as a little more than expensive.
I have suggested that perhaps pistons from another engine might fit and that there are companies that will can a one-off crankshaft.
Does anyone have any pointers please? I did offer him one of my 2.5 litre V8 engines.....

Those prices seem disproportionate. Check out Riley Register Spares Limited. Crankshafts c.£1750 and pistons c.£80 each.

Thank you. I did wonder why my friend's prices were on the high side. Perhaps there is more to it than he has mentioned

As always with restoring an older car the cost more often than not exceeds the finished value, in this case the finished article will be worth £25-30,000 so a nice thing to own but a bit special when it comes to spares, so I guess difficult to find and therefore expensive

As suggested he should join one of the Riley clubs and get advice perhaps.

I take it Newdexter that he sent the body to a specialist not sold it?
