DE36 gearbox

Post by Roark »

The gearbox on my DE36 hasn't been in operation for over a year after I had a major problem with sticking brakes. I have cleaned up all the brakes, fitted the shoes and have a problem with re-fitting the drums.

However, now that the car is up on heavy duty stands I am able to whizz around underneath on a mechanic's skate. There is a large oil stain under the gearbox and flywheel and I cleaned one drop or two off the flywheel but the gearbox has lots of little stalactites of oil on the large number of bolts on the underside.

Clearly the flywheel oil seal should be replaced and perhaps someone should try changing some of the seals in the gearbox. It looks a rather large unit and I have to find something that will permit me to lower the gearbox horizontally, so a trolley jack might not be the best choice and perhaps I should try looking for a proper gearbox trolley.

Can anyone recommend someone who can cary out such work please? I can remove the gearbox but whoever does the work would need to know what an epicyclic gearbox is and be able to repair it.

Is it a difficult unit for the reasonably competent home mechanic to tackle?
