Why?

Post by New Dexter »

I am sure some of us have worked on a vehicle and struggled to remove/replace/repair something and asked why somebody chose to design the item the way they had.
Strugglingly to bleed the brakes on one of my vehicles it was easy at the start but became more frustrating as time went on. The rear brakes are single leading shoe, brake cylinder at the top and each shoe north south located. The bleed nipple is easy to reach, the rubber hose for the bleed pipe fits easily and that bit was completed without colouring the air.
However, the front brakes are twin leading shoe and the cylinder is at the bottom with the bleed nipple about 1/2" from the bottom suspension swivel. This makes fitting the bleed pipe difficult and I wondered why it would not have been possible to manufacture the axle with the back plate turned to one side so that the bleed nipple was easy to use. Is there any reason why brake shoes must be fitted north/south with the cylinders a few degrees off dead top or dead bottom?

Why ? Because the guy who conceived that was an engineer.

You know, the kind of chap who believes that if it ain't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet.
