Regulate connecting rods and bearings

Post by Culbu »

Hello,

Is there among the DLOC members someone able to regulate a set of connecting rods and of bearings for a 12/6 engine ? The prices in France are so expensive...

Good morning Julian,

What do you mean "regulate" a set of connecting rods as it is not a term I've come across. Could it be a descrepancy in translation?

Also, what is your "12/6" engine? Could it be that you are looking to have the connecting rods re white-metalled?

Regards,

Stan.

Yes Stan I was about to ask the same, i suspect Julian means to have them white metalled as we'd say.

Good afternoon,

All my apologies Graham and Stan. You're right, by "regulate", you would mean have them white metalled !! In France, this "white metal" is called "régule".

Concerning my engine, it came from a Lanchester Light-Six, 1378cc and 12.08 RAC HP.

Now that we are all talking about the same thing, do you know someone who is able to do white metal bearings work ?

Julian

That's the man - he's a sleeve valve expert and has done lots of research into white metalling.

Good morning Julian,

Coronavirus aside putting a stop on procedings, there are a number of contacts here in the U.K. whom you can speak to once the pandemic is over - but at least we can clarify a few things in advance.

Firstly, what is the condition of the crank - and have you measured the journals to determine they are still to size? I say this because in many cases, the crank may have to be reground as and when big end bearings require re-metaling.

In any case, it is imperative to supply the crank with the connecting rods to whoever does the re-metaling to ensure the correct fit and finish.

If you want to discuss "in depth" you can email me direct at - sleevevalve@mail.com or 'phone me on 01785 713862.

Regards,

Stan.

P.S.
If you do get the job done over here - make sure you raise the question of not having to pay U.K. Value Added Tax (VAT) at 20%!!

Dear Stan,

I hope that you're fine. As the engine parts represent an heavy load, I made them re-white metalled by a French specialist. It was his first time with Lanchester parts so he took his time !!

Today, he sent me some photos of the front main bearing and he wondered if the gap observed is normal. See photos attached.

What do you think about it please ?

Thanks,

Julian
