An update on tyre availability LA10, LD10 and others.

Post by Simon Hyslop »

This sort of follows on from a post months ago about LA11 tyres but while there's nothing to report on the 11 front just yet, read on if you have a 19" 10 or an LD10.

(I have no connection with any firms, just interested in what deals are out there)

To summarise where things were briefly, it appears that Dunlop had stopped making various old sizes due to the closure of the Fort Dunlop plant. VTS were showing an increasing number of sizes, including 475/500 x 18 , as out of stock but now that size in a Dunlop tyre has disappeared off their listing.
(NHT - North Hants Tyres
VTS - Vintage Tyre Supplies)
However, VTS are now stocking some sizes of Ensign tyres which are British made and look as Iif they could be from the previous moulds ????
It looked as if Ensign were to be the natural successors to the Dunlop range but now NHT have TT Classics Roadmaster in 3 sizes, also in the B5 tread pattern previously used by Dunlop. Where do they come from? Don't know yet but at first glance they look very similar to the Excelsior tyres NHT already distribute but the difference is in the price. At the moment NHT are selling the 500/525x 16 and 450x19 (LD10 and early LA10) at £55 + VAT UK carriage free. That' s less than they are from other retailers including ebay. NHT say it's an introductory offer and I'm tempted to get one of each and see what they look like in the rubber ( or nylon, or....)
I can only hope that between these two brands,, there may be an expansion in the range of sizes available provided they are of somewhat decent quality.

Finally, gripe of the day
It seems such a paradox that a £40 radial tyre is subject to a barrage of EU tests allowing some objective performance comparison between it and a competitor 50p dearer or cheaper whereas if you buy crossplies ranging between £65 and £300 in one size you have absolutely no way of knowing what their performance may be.
