Great to see my old "Woody" again.

If my memory serves me, this is one of our cars that I rescued when editing the "Through the Grapevine" spot in the mag. many years ago. Before the advent of the internet, this was a way of bringing things to members' attention by getting items included at the very last minute.

I wonder if it still has the REME-reconditioned DB18 engine (courtesy of the Suez Crises) needed to get it going. I those days such unused & crated engine were available from an Army surplus store.

You may wonder why anyone would wand to put a Station Car body on such a chassis, but at the time they did not attract purchase tax. Besides, if you were sending your Limousine to the station to collect important guests, you had to have a second vehicle with the right grill for the luggage.

Just to say that the car did not sell today and was 'passed' or 'sorry staying with us'.

But then only 18 cars out of over 50 on sale did sell, the auction room was very quiet when I was there, I left at about lot 20.

A 1946 Daimler DB18 shooting brake, registration number FWD 849, chassis number 50573, black. This rare woody shooting brake, is believed to be the only remaining example, and is finished in black coachwork with a contrasting black vinyl roof and recently refurbished ash framework. The interior is trimmed with brown leather seats, wooden dashboard, door cards and reclining rear seat and is fitted a pre select gearbox. FWD 849 is a well known car in woody circles having attended many classic vehicle events in the South West and appearing in classic publications including Tailgate Issue 69-2014 where it appeared in an article that was featured on the front cover. FWD 849 has an accompanying history file which contains correspondence from Daimler including a letter dated 1947, receipts, past MOTs, magazine articles and ephemera. This incredibly rare shooting brake would make an excellent tow vehicle for a vintage racer or station wagon on a country estate. The Daimler is now available for auction due to the vendor streamlining his collection. V5, V5C, MOT exempt
