SP250 possibly for sale??

Post by wejxf03 »

After much deliberation I still can't make up my mind whether to sell my Dart.
I'm getting older and don't seem to be using it as much lately.
It's a 1962 B spec with rack and pinion, Austin Healey clutch, overdrive etc. done by Robert Grinter a few years ago.
Good useable condition but not show quality if you know what I mean.
Values of immaculate examples seem to be well into the £40k mark now so if I did decide to sell, does around the £30k mark sound roughly right?
I cetrainly regretted selling my old Land Rover a couple of years - now worh double what I sold it for.
Comments welcome either way.

cheers

John, that is the $50,000 question we who own a classic car would like an answer too.

Some cars, especially the SP, have done rather well in the past years and have been a very sound investment, as well as being a joy to own and drive.

But times change and we have to ask the question, what will happen over the coming years? Particularly with respect to the changes to exhaust emission regulations and electric vehicles, so like all investments there are risks.

I guess it all depends on how you see the future with our cars, they are making good money and increasing in value at present but will it last?

Personally I think they will retain and grow their value, at least in the short term so I intend to hold on to my cars on that assumption, but will keep a close eye on the market and act accordingly, that is if I can bear to part with any of them.

Of course that assumes you can afford to keep the car in sound condition so it retains it's value and provided you have a dry garage to keep it in, you don't have to drive it to do that. Syd

I think the peak for SP 250's has come and gone. I also think that they will decline very slowly in value as the age of folk that remember them influences the market.
I hope I am wrong!

I think they will always be valuable and appreciated by younger people; my niece's boyfriend likes mine.

However, I do agree that the peak seems to have passed. I don't think the average sale value has gone up since 2013 or thereabouts.

If Britain's economy slumps after Brexit, it will be many years before they increase in value, but eventually they will.

I very much agree John, there is and always will be a risk investing in classic cars, so many burned their fingers just after the bank crash and it took the market a long time to stabilise again.

It is remarkable the way things have moved on and quite different cars have joined the classic car list of desirables, cars the likes of the Escort Mexico, Capri and BL Mini Cooper have increased in value as those who aspired to one in their youth, get into their dotage and have a bit of pension fund cash to spare.

There is also the desire to own something different that comes out in us all, who could possibly resist an arguably ugly sports car with that V8 note, that goes like a bat out of hell. Syd

Thanks everyone for your comments.
Still mulling it over as it's a big decision for me.
Fell in love with these cars when an uncle of mine took me out in his SP in the 60's.
We were on the old A2 in Kent, he stuck it in 4th gear at 15mph put his foot down until we hit 120.
Fell in love with the cars as a teenager and eventually got one (another story).

Am usually fairly good with decisions but not easy with this one.

cheers

Think I've decided to sell it.
Think I might regret it.

I feel the 'key' with classic cars surround personal enjoyment.. Ive been very much immersed in the hobby for over 40 yrs and have a full time restoration facility..but at best one might 'break even' in terms of funds invested v funds realized when selling..commonly its a significant financial loss. By far the best buy is the fully historied low mileage one or two cherished owner original car .. it often costs double that of a sound but 'average' tidy example, but a lot less to keep in good shape.. restoration costs are always hard to calculate.. and the standard of work varies immensely.. most seem to express 'post sale regret' but we all decieve ourselves.. the car is never as good as is remembered and some of them are a huge pain in the arse and give constant problems.. which are fast forgotten when its sold.. if we did not recollect the highlights with fondness. we'd all be miserable when older..

Now you have another difficult decision John!
Who to sell to? Do you go for maximum profit or do you contact someone like me who has a true love of SP's and let me have it at a ridiculously low price knowing that it would make me very happy enjoying the summer time? :D
