DE27 Chassis D51074 Sold at Bonhams today

Post by Chris_R »

This just sold today at Bonhams Olympia auction for £1,265 including premium.

Auctioneers description
This Daimler DE27 limousine is one of only 205 made. Said to start 'on the button' and to drive well, the car is described by the private vendor as in generally good condition, though we are advised that the bodywork would benefit from tidying and that the exhaust manifold gasket needs replacing. The engine's timing chain was replaced three years ago and the interior re-trimmed within the last five years, while the provision of flashing indicators and front seat belts are the only notified deviations from factory specification. Mechanically sound but cosmetically improvable, this imposing Daimler is offered with a V5 registration document.

Am I missing something or misreading something? £1,265 ! For the whole car? Is the comma in the wrong place?

Yes, £1,265 for the whole car. Unless Bonhams have put the comma in the wrong place on the auction website.
I guess a no reserve auction and only 1 person interested. I don't know what the pre-auction estimate was, I missed that bit.

Sounds like 1000 pounds plus commission plus vat

I bet the bidder wished he'd gone in at 500 pounds!
How shocking.

No wonder a recent film about our monarch early reign misrepresented the facts by exclusively using Rolls Royces as there are no DE27s/36s suitable for using. (The only Daimlers we saw were in contemporary newsreels)
How sad.

I watched much of the Bonhams auction, a lot of their estimates were a long way over final bids. I don't think anything that sold reached the lower estimates. Not that I heard anyway.

Crikey. A sobering thought. I have a rough 36. The 27 looks tidy. I think the cost of sandpaper and other consumables used as part of the restoration would exceed 1200 pounds.

A rare Italian built 1966 Jensen Interceptor project failed to sell. A Messerschmidt KR200 project car sold for over £17k. There's no predicting for tastes and what is or is not desired.
