sp250 auto gearbox

Post by catsnap2 » Mon Sep 24, 2018 7:30 pm

Can someone guide me to a book of words concerning the auto box on my car. I have the original workshop manual but it doesn't say anything about the auto box.

Im assuming it uses the same box as the saloon..which is a Uk built 'Borg Warner model 35'. (used in many other cars of same age..the Jag mk2 up till '65 used the archaic BW DG250..then went to the BW35 until end of production) you should be able to get a manual for the gearbox online as a separate publication online .. if not all the info is in the factory shop manual for the V8 2 1/2litre/ 250 saloons..

I'm not familiar with Borg Warner transmission nomenclature, but note that the Police SP's were fitted with Model 8 auto transmissions and the SP parts Catalogue lists the auto box as a Borg Warner Model DG. There were many variants of B-W transmissions with a high degree of commonality and there is a lot of data on the web which may be of help.

Catnap,
I have an automatic SP and it is fitted with a DG box.
There is a supplement for this and if you email me I will scan it for you.
Cheers

Not wishing to be negative, but the BW DG is a really crap gearbox.. and heavy to boot ( cast iron case) the model 8 is the later version (fitted to 420s and early XJs I believe ) and still crap.. they are prone to leaks ( front seal goes out when they sit for extended periods..as does the bellows seal ) they commonly do not shift gently and consume lots of power..
the BW 35 is a vast improvement..much lighter with its alloy case.. most (but not all) saloons also have an alloy bell housing and they have an oil cooler attached.. which keeps fund at stable times and helps keep shifting consistent.. also cheap to source in UK.. I believe in Uk you can purchase a conversion to the ZF 4HP22 ( as used in XJ40 and Range rovers and many BMWs )as well as being amore modern unit, this has the advantage of an overdrive ..

The ZF 4HP 22 is very easy to adapt to The Daimler V8. I have done it by myself on my Saloon.

And it is a great improvement. The car is now like a modern car.

I'm afraid I cannot agree that the DG is a "crap box". It is, of course, an old design and therefore the change quality it perhaps more abrupt than we have become used to, but the general consensus of engineers in the UK was that it was beautifully engineered , and its performance - particularly fuel consumption - was enhanced by the lock up torque converter . That seems to be why it was chosen for all the early automatic UK cars (except RR/Bentley and the Princess A135 which used the Hydramatic ) - Jaguar, Daimler , Humber, Armstrong Siddeley, and later the Rover 3 litre. It also seems to be why it was chosen to take a licence from Detroit for UK production at Letchworth .
