Darts

Post by Bud »

So why did Dodge Chrysler really go after Daimler to change the name from Dart to SP 250.
There was the Gogomobile Dart and the GSM Dart already in production at the same time and earlier in the 50's. And they were also GFR bodied like the SP.
Who's to say Dodge didn't steal the name from them and put on their concept car because the first production D/C Dart was in 1960 and was NOWHERE near the 1954 concept design originally presented besides having 4 wheels and the name.

Here's the badge on your car Bud......

...which I guess you copied from the early U.S. daimler brochure script?...

...and here's the emblem from a '63 Dodge Dart....

As Kevin Monk points out here on the old forum, the scripts are certainly similar and perhaps that's what particularly upset Chrysler.

...or maybe what really got up their nose was the fact that Chrysler had just dropped (in '58) the 'Firepower Hemi' engine and here was a crummy brit trying to muscle in with their own 'hemi'. Chrysler re-introduced a hemi in '64 - just as Daimler withdrew!

Silly really, but I sometimes think The Daimler SP250 should have been called a BSA Scout, at least in the USA.
There were BSA dealers and everything allready set up there; BSA was a recognised brand in USA and bikers were starting to upgrade to cars at that time.
Daimler was unknown and there was a real shortage of dealers in USA.
They would have had their reasons for all their decisions though I am sure.
Re the Dart name, I suppose they had such a shortages of funds that i wonder if they did not want to risk legal action form a car making giant in a foriegn country.
Mind you, some say that all publicity is good!

I see that there is currently a GSM Dart for sale on Ebay in Australia http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HISTORIC-RAC ... SwLF1X2k3m with several pictures
Interesting how some of the styling cues are similar to our Darts'

An American member of the old Forum [unfortunately not yet posted on this forum] called Rodger Martin [alias Relmiad] owned a GSM Dart in the past in South Africa but he progressed to owning a proper SP250 Dart.
If you want to know about GSM ones ask him, he is in the pasSPort.
His Daimler SP250 is a splendid example of the type.
