Speedometer waver

Post by migray »

The speedometer on my 1961 SP250 has not been showing a very constant reading, sometimes oscillating by around 10 MPH. I thought this was due to the drive cable catching somewhere but I hadn't managed to improve it. However I was speaking to another owner (some time ago) who suggested the odometer can be sticky and this can have a knock on effect to the speed reading. Well I took the mechanism out of the gauge yesterday and lightly oiled the ratchet pivot for the odometer and the spindles for the number rings. Put it back together and went for a drive. The reading was much steadier - a result. Hope that helps someone else.

Mike
