hello nick bit confused now . would your mods still apply if I went with nicks idea using just the internals in my original box and also the rear end mount overdrive unit. ?

The mods I suggested apply to a standard SP250 gearbox casing - fitted with whatever internals you like - married to a Laycock 'J' type overdrive unit. Fitting any other gearbox and/or overdrive unit will bring a different set of problems.

The pictures below show an SP250 gearbox before....

Oh, and by the way, I forgot to add that you'll need to widen the glass-fibre gearbox cover locally to accommodate the overdrive unit, which in turn will make getting your fingers round the handbrake lever very tight.

fwiw, I found that access to the handbrake was improved by substituting the original bolts (5/8 from memory - somewhat overspec in my view) by smaller ones (I think I used 3/8) which then allows the lever to be angled away from the widened tunnel sufficiently to be able to get your fingers in and operate it.
