weight of V8 250 ENGINE

Post by TWF »

Hi, what is the dry weight of a v8 250 engine, is it best to remove the heads prior to removing it from my SP in order to reduce the weight and also what is the general opinion on just fitting rings or is it generally considered necessary to re bore and fit new pistons .( I have no idea of the mileage of the engine ) Regards , Terry.

It's about 200Kg. (with heads). Certainly removing the heads first will reduce weight, but with the appropriate lifting gear it comes out easily enough with everything in situ. If you have reason to believe the engine has need of overhaul then you won't know whether it needs a rebore or just new rings until you strip it down and inspect it.

the weight question has been answered..as regards what it will take to get the engine into excellent running condition its all dependant upon what one finds when it is cleaned, stripped and each part inspected.. re-ringing a piston is time consuming in comparison to replacing a position assembly with new..(its clean up that takes the time..faster with professional equipment such as solvent tanks and media blasters) wear in the cylinder bores will determine what action is required in that area.. the crankshaft and bearings tend to wear before cylinder bores.. as do cam and lifters.. cylinder head corrosion is common.. as are worn valve guides.. IF you are on a tight budget, spend the money on getting the bottom end right .. you can get away with about .002-004" bore wear by fitting some aftermarket oil rings designed for worn bores.. these engines take the same rings as the BMC 1622cc engine..(also 76.2mm/3.0" :- MGA mk2, austin A60.. J4 van etc) there seem to be plenty of old stock 'cords' brand rings available in UK and these are excellent for compensating for worn bores ..you would need two sets of the BMC ones for the daimler V8.. if there is wear in the piston skirt, you may be able to get the piston skirts knurled in order to reduce clearance in bore.. stronger oil pressure relief springs is also recommended as the std one blows off at around 40-45psi once its settled down.. the generally accepted rule is 10psi per 1,000rpms.. a 3/16" spacer under a new relief valve spring will bring you to +/- 50 psi above 2,500 rpms hot on an engine who's bearings are all within factory clearances.. hope this helps..
