Nick, I did the fuel gauge many years ago when I fitted a new tank sender, ( they are supposed to be matched pairs) I managed to get the full on the line and 1/2 tank reading correct, unfortunately not the empty, that was always below the mark, as I had a reserve facility it wasn't a problem just drove until it cut out then filled up within the next 20-25 miles if on a motorway or the next station if about town. Mine was trial and error as I had no procedure, working on the principle "it's on a car, it can't be that technical" :D
