Thanks all,

As I thought it's not a straight forward decision!

Like Syd I have a similar sized wife and the effort is just too much for her so declines to drive.

As I'm intending to rebuild the front suspension whilst the engine is out the effort should be very little more to adapt to PS was my view?

I've now acquired a beam, steering box, pump, reservoir, pipes, belt tensioner and engine mount so accumulated this week most of the parts and short of the knuckle joints and lower steering column. I already had a pulley on my spare engine

Theory is now to refurb these items before rebuild.

So challenge now to find the required lower steering column shaft and knuckle joints so I'll be adding a add in the parts wanted column shortly once I've had a chance to go through the newly acquired components and consider what else is required apart from necessary rebuild kits for pump and steering box.

So hopefully I won't be too disappointed with the light steering but I guess my wife will be!

Thanks for the help.

Cheers

Phil

Phil it makes a big difference if you already have the car in bits and in your circumstances I would also go for it, but to strip an otherwise useable car down to do the job is a very different matter, good luck with the work.

Mike I am using 34 lb so a bit harder than you but my tyres have harder walls than Mitchelin .

Hello Phil,

I have installed power steering in my V8 2.5 ltr from 1965. So i had to use the Burmann type steering house, because in my car the cross member is not cut out to give room to the bigger Advest steering house.
You do indeed need an other lower steering column and tie rods. To house the Eaton Hobourn pump you need a different engine mounting bracket C21063 or C 28332 on the left side. Also the pulley on the crankshaft is different because it has to comfort two belts ( C20974 ). In the Spare Parts Catalogue all parts you need are clearly mentioned. I do have a second hand Advest steering house, which i wrongly bought in the beginning of my project, and i am willing to sell it for a very reasonable price .

Kind regards,
Simon

Hi Simon,

Thanks for your reply. I have now collected everything \\\\\i need from your list with only the lower steering column to find.

A further question on that though, as I don't have a parts catalogue (obviously a must purchase item) is the lower steering column the same for both Burman and Adwest options?

Cheers

Phil

Hello Phil,

I am not sure if the Advest and Burmann Steering box have the same lower steering Column.
The Catalogue Parts list mentions 3 different numbers for 3 lower steering column assemblies used at power assistant steering. I only measured the lenght between the end of the inner column and the shaft on the steering box and searched on a scrapyard specialised in Jaguar and Daimler parts for the right lenght with the same end-yokes as on the inner column. I wish you succes.

Kind regards,
Simon

Given that almost all of the power steering options are 'reversible' (back to standard) Id personally not be too concerned about originality and more concentrate on what will work best for money outlayed.. I have no personal experience with the most recent electronic assist conversion that fit in the steering column ( by far the easiest route to take in terms of installation) but have heard very good reviews for those who have fitted them.. as regards 'mechanically/hyraulically assisted' conversions.. more work involved..I believe that the front subframes were standardized to take the adwest box post sept '67 on All Mk2 jaguar variants.. the adwest variable ratio box takes little getting used to.. and the original set up for pump is not very well engineered.. a better route is to consider the rack and pinion conversion sold by Vicarage, which is well thought out and bolts in without to much fuss.. I believe the later slimline bumper cars with factory PAS had the pump re-located to top of engine.. along with improved bracket for alternator etc.. cast alloy instead of the former bent and welded steel dynamo brackets which were very poorly thought out and tend to crack and break with regularity..
