Flinty backs up what I have heard in the past. It’s not just eBay though, auto jumbles and some suppliers are dishing them out as well. Sadly I tried NGK plugs and had a similar saga as Fossil. Most of the Lucas branded stuff seems to have the same problems.
Colin,
I may be slow but I’m rough as well !

The extended electrode on the BP6ES is suited to the deep combustion chamber of hemi heads. I think the idea is to promote a faster burn time of the mixture by igniting the mixture nearer the centre of the the chamber.

I'll agree that the NGK BP6ES does the job well ...so does the Bosch equivalent.. Champion (original equipment..but who knows who owns the brand name now,or where they are made) have changed their coding and I dont have it in front of me (I fitted the equiv of 'N8' in the last 2 engines built for customers.. one of which has reported the car 'has never ran as well as is does now')
Id say that NGK spark plus are excellent quality and value.. no need to look further if they avail in your area.

Paul / tjt77,

Are you saying that the BP6ES is probably a better suited plug for the V8 rather than the B6ES ??

I have to say that I've never had any issues with NGK - specifically the BP6ES, currently used in my other classics.

Many thanks.

Yes Richard I think they are or any other extended nose plug for use in a hemi head engine.
I have no actual proof of that but my engine guy with many years of experience dyno tuning recommended them.
cheers

Such a fascinating topic with so many varied experiences. In my case I recently replaced the NGK BP6ES plugs in my V8 250 with Champion N5K plugs which yielded better tick-over & generally smoother performance!
Best wishes, Dave B

One of the parameters for which spark plug application was calculated for specific engines was heat range.. the coding on champion plugs was, the lower the number ..the 'colder' the plug ... i.e. an N3 was a 'colder' plug than an N5.. (colder can also be described as 'harder') so for 'competition' purposes it was common to use an N3 in an engine specified for N5.
The issue of extended nose is also a thing to consider..My understanding (please correct if anyone knows better) the 'BP' in NGK plugs relates to 'extended' nose.. a B6 has the normal position electrode ( as per champion N8.. orig equip) .. one of the old tricks for an engine that had an issue of fouling plugs was to use shorter reach plug (i.e...the electrode is deeper recessed ..further away from combustion chamber)
As I recall for about 40yrs back, the common replacement to improve starting in the Uk winters on contemporary jaguar engines ( hemi chamber as with the turner V8) was to replace the N8 plugs with UN12Y ..these were 'extended nose' plugs that were 'softer' ..or 'hotter'..
My experience is that the NGK brand BP6 ( extended nose) plugs in the Turner V8, seem to have the edge over normal (non extended) B6 electrode plugs on a freshly rebuilt engine ..
'original specification' was Champion N8.. which did not come with an extended nose.. the extended nose equiv closest in heat range would have been the N9Y.. so am not sure why the common 'crossover' was UN12Y back in the day..
hemispherical combustion chamber engines tend to fire the fuel little quicker than engines with ricardo design combustion chamber .. hence higher octane fuels are beneficial in hemi head engines ..the higher octane.. the wider or slower the range of 'burn'.. low octane fuels have a lower 'flash' point.. they burn up faster.. (and hence increase the chance of 'detonation' or 'pinging' in US speak)
Logically a recessed electrode plug would help produce a slightly slower burn.. as to how significant this is.. minimal, I'd suspect..
