SP 250 canister oil filter

Post by DTW »

What screw on canister that is universally available has been found to be suitable for the SP? Bypass pressures seem to vary quite a lot.

After overhauling my engine Russ Carpenter fitted a WIX WL7074 (MANN W712/43, MAHLE OC82 equivalents) spin-on filter, and during oil change I've replaced it with the same. (I'm guessing Russ knows a thing or two about these engines by now)

This filter is widely available with multiple applications - see here.

I installed a Flexolite spin on adapter to my SP250 and am using a Fram PH2870A spin on filter. It is readily available in the States and via many online retailers.

Thank you Tim and Nick. I have checked with my local factors who stock Mahle. Like you Nick, I would assume Russ Knows what he is doing and will use his OC82.

Thanks for the part numbers above, I have been able to add a couple to the article listing them.
There are a surprisingly large number of filters that will screw onto the Flexolite spin-on conversion, but their lengths will affect their ease of fitting owing to variations in the exhaust down-pipes.
Would you be able to give the lengths of the filters above, as I add these to the list where possible.
Thank you for your help.

The Wix WL7074 is a compact 80.5 mm long Wilf. It's a fitment for Ford Escort/Fiesta/Focus/Ka/Orion etc. various SAABs and Alfa-Romeo V-6's amongst others.

Although it's much easier to change than the original paper element type, it's still possible to soak the exhaust flexi with oil unless you remember to cover it (which can make for some alarming smoke the next time you start the car!)

The Fram PH2870A filter is 3.0940 inches / 78.588 mm long. My restoration is still in process and I haven't had the need to actually change the filter, so I cant speak to ease quite yet (though appears to be much easier than the stock canister setup). I'm getting closer every day though...can't wait to change that filter for the first time!
