The door cards on my 1968 250 v8 are fair condition apart from the arm rest, so stripped it and found the half moon shape appears to have been formed by a very malleable thin hardboard. Can anyone tell me how on earth this shape was achieved . I may be able to recover it, but my inquisitive nature would love to know : what is the hardboard type wood, and how was it shaped??

the hardboard is a common standard material which remains readily available from places that keep home improvements and building supplies.. most professional upholstery shops bend it with the use of steam .. you can also bend it by making a form to clamp it to and then soaking the relevant section you have cut to size in water for few hours or overnight...leave it to dry clamped in place and it will retain the shape when dry..
if you want a replacement piece to outlast the original, then seal it with a good quality paint or primer before upholstering..
