sp250 auto gearbox
Re: sp250 auto gearbox
Question for IMOH :- what does it take to adapt the ZF 4HP22 gearbox ? appears you've kept the standard bell housing .. these gearboxes are very common in USA and are very robust (all the early 90s range rovers have them ..and junk yards are full of them) .. I did have a full adaptor kit made to install a GM '200 R4' overdrive auto box ( quite a lot of work..required a flywheel adaptor to take the GM drive plate.. a 1 1/4" thick alloy adaptor/backing plate ..and a GM style gear reduction starter and adaptor plate to fit ..so far i have NOT installed it .. was awaiting to finish the engine rebuild (mostly done..awaiting time to assemble) but would prefer the ZF box as I'm very familiar with it and have a few on hand..

Hello
First of all, I'm french (nobody's perfect) so sorry for my english.
Before adapting the gearbox, I've done many research on this forum (the old one) and on the Triumph Stag forum where I found many help. Thank to them. It seems that it is much more easier with the Turner V8 than the Triumph V8 engine.
This convertion is reversible in the unprobable case you want to return to the BW35.
I've done it on a V8 saloon, but I think it is the same with SP250.
I use a ZF4 HP22 from a XJ40 or 300 Jaguar because the output flange is the same than Daimler one.
The only special parts you need is an adaptor plate like that :
In my case, done by water cutting for 25 €.
And a spacer for the propeller shaft.
You need also the rear mounting device of the ZF box. But you can also made one from scratch.
All the other parts are from the Daimler, bell housing, starter, flexiplate, gear selector, exhaust, kickdown linkage, and need very little adaptation.
The more difficult is that there is no speedometer cable on the ZF. In the US there are some device to drive the Smith speedometer, But I' have converted mine to electronic, driven with Hall sensor. When done nothing is visible exept the digits for the odometer.
If people are interested, I can detail.

Re: sp250 auto gearbox
thank you for posting the images and the explanation..this looks to be a relatively straightforward conversion.. Im assuming the torque converter fits the std daimler drive plate ?
these boxes are easy to obtain and cheap where i live.. I have all the parts onhand apart from bell housing adaptor, as pulled from an 88 XJ6 ( they were never sold as 'XJ40' In USA) an alternative path for front propshaft is to have it lengthened with a new tube....this would lessen the odds of 'imbalance' and is relatively easy to achieve as there are several drive line specialists in my area..
good.. I can use the 200R4 in one of the jaguars..normal conversion for which uses the longer and wider 700R4...in itself requiring a modification to the floor in order to fit.

Re: sp250 auto gearbox
Yes the new torque converter fits the Daimler flexiplate. Just 3 holes to drill.
BW and ZF torque converter
ZF after a little job on a late
For the propshaft there is no "imbalance" problem and its is cheaper than lenghtening I think.
There is a little modification of the floor, as the rear of the gearbox is wider.
But it is not difficult to do.
