Sounds like you need to adjust the handbrake, which on the Dart is a very easy job to do.
I have never heard of anyone else ever wanting to alter the mechanism to the standard method of operation. I think the racing handbrake fitted to the Dart is great and very efficient.

The handbrake mechanism is very efficient but does need to be set up properly. Check the manual & set it up as instructed. My handbrake will lock the wheels even in motion.
